Eating Disorders: Profiles of Pain
Anorexia nervosa, characterized by self-starvation and excessive weight loss, and bulimia
nervosa, characterized by cycles of binge eating and purging, are two of the most
prevalent eating disorders, In this compelling documentary female and male teens share the
pressures, from the media, parents, and peers, that can catalyze these devastating
disorders, and the psychological isolation and obsession, as well as physical demise and
even death, that can ensue as the disorders persist. Dr. Mojgan Khademi, a therapist for
eating disorder patients, shares valuable insights into the societal and personal aspects
of these phenomena. Dr. Randall Flanery of the eating disorders program at St. Louis
University provides additional wisdom on the hidden, private nature typical of eating
disorders. All this is presented by a teen narrator in a manner that young audiences will
find candid, informative, and sympathetic; at the same time, the program provides
realistic medical and psychological facts that are meant to help deter future eating
disorders and begin to treat existing ones.
