Cooking? Kochen? Have an International
Dinner Night
|
|
 |
Chicken and rice again? Didn't we
have meatloaf last week? If you've heard that from your kids, then
its probably time to try something different. One way to make
cooking new dishes fun and educational for your family is to have an
international dinner night. Cooking a dish from another culture with
your child teaches him or her about new foods, spices, drinks,
appetizers etc. In many cases the foods that kids don't like are the
basis for many foreign dishes. Cooking international meals may be
just the thing to get kids to eat something healthy like Greek
hummus (which is based on chick peas.)
Making an international meal is great way to spend quality time with
your family. When you cook with your family you can use the time to
catch up with your child, teach them cooking skiils, and educate
them about different foods of the world. If you decide to make
international meals a once or twice a month ritual, ask your kids
for suggestions. This gets them involved with the cooking and will
hopefully get them excited about eating new and healthy foods.
Here are some ideas for an international dinner night
1) Ask your child about a culture they've learned about recently in
school or about a country they would like to go to. Have them
research online what kinds of foods the natives of this culture eat.
2) Buy the items for the meal together with your child.
3) Invite your child's friends over for the meal. This will help
instill a sense of pride in your child. Watch how they brag to their
friends about all their hard work!
4) Dress up like the natives whose dish you are creating. Who says
dinner has to be just about food!
