Problem? Reframe It! Turn Problems into Challenges for Your Kids.

“You never know what you can do until you try!” I have used this axiom in my classroom for several years to encourage my students to believe in themselves. When they come across a problem whether it be with class work, another student, or personal, I tell them to reframe the issue to find out what the dilemma is all about. Reframing is a great technique to finding solutions to problems.

There are several ways to reframe a problem. Here are some ways that you can reframe personal problems for your kids or students.

1) Perspective – A problem is hardly ever one dimensional. There are several aspects to a problem. Try to make your child see the various sides of it. Ask the child the following questions. How are you feeling?  How do they think the other person is reacting?  Why do they feel that way? How would you feel if you were that person?

2) Find areas of common interest – When people have a disagreement there is usually something that both parties can agree on. For starters they both have problem with each other. So right there you have something they have in common. Once your child is able to see a problem from another perspective as outlined above, provide a reasonable alternative that your youngster can deal with.

3) Spin it – Something is always learned from every experience-good or bad. Ask your child the following questions. What is a something that you have learned from this experience? Would you allow this to happen again? How will you prevent this from reoccurring? What could you have done differently?
