How to Build A Foundation For Success In Your Child

" Do as I say not as I do." If you are a parent or a teacher, you can't say this to your child or student. Children do what they see. As the adult we have to model positive behaviors. This is the first step in building a foundation for success in your child. You also need to instill a value system and a good work ethic.

Behaviors that encourage kids to get along and respect others are among the positive behaviors we as adults must model for our kids. Other behaviors parents should encourage are

1) Creativity - If there is something that you are good at for example, the guitar, invite your child to come watch you play and help them find out what their passion is.

2) Getting along with others. Good interpersonal skills are important throughout life. Kids need to learn at a young age how to act with their peers and with adults.

3) Respect - No one wants to be disrespected. Although raising your voice is necessary at times, avoid yelling at your child. If you as a parent or teacher yell at a youngster, the child will feel that they have no reason to respect you because you yell at them. Another way to model respect is to not use profanity (towards others) in front of your child or towards your child. Using profanity in front of children is one of the worst behaviors we can teach our young ones. Children see how we as adults respect each other by how we talk to one another.

Another aspect to building a foundation for success in your child is instilling a value system and good work ethic. Some of the skills obtained by having these values are working diligently, managing money wisely, being organized, and being considerate to others. Behaviors needed to obtain these skills must me modeled for kids consistently. For example, keeping your workspace at home clear of clutter, clipping coupons with your child or helping your child make a budget are examples of this. Children with a strong value system are usually better able to deal with life's challenges when they are both young and old.

Following these simple guidelines can help your child lead a better life.
