Roadblocks to Learning: Pointing the Reasons for Underachievement

If you’re child doesn’t excel in school, even after you intensively collaborate with him there is probably a roadblock to your youngster's learning. Most roadblocks are either biological or environmental. An example of an environmental roadblock may be excess stimuli at home such as a TVs, video game consoles, or friends. Not having a quiet area to study is also a type of environmental roadblock. Biological roadblocks to learning are usually psychological conditions such as ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) or ODD (Oppositional Defiance Disorder.)  Luckily, these types of roadblocks to learning are treatable.

Below is a checklist of things you should do when you realize that your child is having difficulties learning.

1)      Look at the set up of your child’s room and study area. Please read Create an Academic Environment at Home for more information on how your child’s room should be organized.

2)      Speak with your child’s teachers. In the problem classes find out how other children are performing. Ask the teacher what you can do to help your child achieve. Find out what your child is studying in class, who they sit next to, and what their behavior is like.

3)      Hire a tutor. For more information on when it’s time to get a tutor read When Is it Time to Get a Tutor?

4)      Ask an administrator at your youngster’s school for your child to be evaluated. This is usually done by the school’s guidance counselor or testing administrator. Having your child assessed is an excellent way to pin point what the problem is.

5)      Bring your youngster to a child counseling clinic. They can perform a battery of tests to find out what services or medications your child may need.
