How to Pick a Book For Your Child

If you want your child to read, knowing how to pick an appropriate book is important. What you as an adult may think is stimulating to a child may appear dull and boring. Therefore as us teachers do, when you pick a book for your youngster the following criteria should be taken into account.

Difficulty Level
1) The reading level of the book should not be too difficult. It should require your child to
occasionally look into a dictionary. Alternatively you can teach your child that if they came
across a word they don't know to read a bit further to see if they can decipher the word's meaning by its context.

Genre
2) Find out what kind of books your child likes. Remember you want your  young one to be engaged with the book. That can only happen if it's a genre of writing that she enjoys.

Size
3) The size of the book should not frighten your child. Many times big books with small text scare away young readers. If your just starting a reading program for your child start with thinner books with large text . Later on, as your child's becomes accustomed to reading, you can gradually give your youngster more challenging material.
