Creating A Study Method That Works

Getting good grades in school can be an enormous challenge for some kids. With their lives filled with television, video games, and hanging out with friends who has time to study? All kidding aside, the main reason that some children achieve poorly in school is because they don’t study. Many children feel overwhelmed when its time to study because they don't know how to. The amount of material to be learned is at many times irrelevant. What's most important is that kids have a method of studying that helps them retain information. If they do not have one you as a parent can guide them.

Ask your child when they have a test. When they do, study with them. Show them how you study. As a teacher, to help my students study, I give them an in class pre-test which we correct in class. As a parent or educator here are some studying strategies that you can use.

1) Make flash cards for your kids. People in general are very visual and tend to remember things that they see over and over without realizing it.

2) Create a test for your child, correct it and then go over it with them.

3) If there is a lot of material to cover, space out the studying over the course of several days. It’s better to do a little bit everyday than trying to cram in everything at once. Don't forget to review what you did the day before, while studying new material.

4) Study with your child. Your presence will help to motivate and show them that you take interest in their academics.

5) If your child gets stuck on something have them take out their textbook and see what was done in the textbook.

6) Ask your child's teacher what your child should focus on.

The best plan to have when studying is a method that helps your child retain information. If your child does not have a study plan create one with them today.
